This show was all at once overwhelming, exhausting and totally rewarding. My two friends and I were in charge of Edna’s onstage quick change behind the Mr. Pinky’s Hefty Hideaway unit. Every night we’d panic, praying to every god we could think of that we’d make the change in time. We would preset the actor’s new shoes, dress and wig, and each of us had a job to do…plus we had to do it in less than 30 seconds. On cue, one of my friends yanked off the old wig and put on the new; I had her step out of the old dress, into the new one set on the deck and then fastened her up; and my other friend, who used to run the floor at women’s shoes at Macy’s, sprawled flat on his stomach to buckle the actor’s character shoes. And we had only a few bars of music to work with. Every night we got better at it until finally we were smoking-hot fast, and when Edna made her entrance and the doors closed her, we jumped up and down, screaming (silently) and high-fiving each other.
